I’m a photographer – marry me?
A few weeks back I wrote about how getting good branding photography can be a bit like tinder for your business. A great commercial shoot can help tell a story about the person behind the business, showing you in your very best light to help you attract new clients and new business. But today I want to talk about what happens way down the line, long after the right swipe, the first date, first kiss, and first fight – I want to talk about marriage.
Don’t worry, I’m not proposing. It’s just that I think that a successful relationship between a commercial photographer and a business is like a successful marriage in lots of ways.
First off, we’re dependable. It might not quite be ‘til death do us part’, but once we’ve established a good relationship and rapport with a client, a commercial photographer can be there for you through everything – end of year events, head shots, product launches. Not only does this save my clients a lot of time they might otherwise have had to spend seeking out new relationships, but there’s a consistency across all their images, a coherent visual language for their brand.
Secondly, we just get each other. As a photographer, when you’ve worked with a company for a number of years you come to understand the whole place. You get a handle on what style is needed, the dynamics of the team, the direction of the business – it all becomes second nature. I know, for example, which clients like things quick and informal, who likes to have more control and oversight, how different teams might interact. The communication process becomes very easy for both of us – instead of exchanging a lot of complex emails to make sure we understand each other, the whole thing becomes slick and efficient. Who wouldn’t want less admin?
And finally, as with all good relationships, we trust each other totally. Once I’ve established a successful, long-term dynamic with a client, I get to really understand both the people running the company and their values and standards. That means not only can you trust the images I produce to stay true to that ethos, but also that I’ll challenge where necessary – and if I suggest something new, it’s because I think it’s in the client’s very best interest.
It sounds wonderfully simple. A commercial photographer who can produce images for several purposes/platforms, who understands your ethos, and who’s always got your brand’s best interests in sight. And it is simple, really – it can take a bit of time to build that relationship, but once you get it, you won’t want to let it go.
