Andrew and Katie's Leicester  house party wedding

Like many people over the last year, Andrew and Katie had to start thinking outside the box when it came to their Leicester wedding! They ended up with a church ceremony and a stretch marquee in Katie’s parents’ garden – venues were not easy to come by – and this DIY wedding turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous celebration of love and togetherness.

When Andrew and Katie got married in Leicestershire earlier this year, there were still some covid restrictions in place in England, so there were a few parameters around what they could achieve – but if there’s anything the world of weddings has learned over the last 18 months it’s that necessity is the mother of invention!

The morning of the wedding was lovely, and I got to do something I rarely have the chance to do – take pictures of the groom getting ready! Andrew’s groomsmen had all been given very specific roles for the day – one was in charge of beer, some were responsible for ironing, and the final one, well…he just had to look pretty. Sadly, not only did the gang run out of Fosters mid morning, but they also were unsure if the iron required water, and to top it all, they managed to lock themselves out the house. They did a sterling job of looking pretty, though! It was a lot of chaotic fun, and a very different vibe to the bridal prep…

Like most bridal parties, Katie and her friends were an organized bunch! Their main concern was how to make their Krispy Kreme ring donuts look good for some pictures…very different concerns to their male counterparts!

Usually during the bridal prep I am used to catching glimpses of the nervous Father of the Bride murmuring away practicing his speech, or scribbling last-minute changes to his notes in a corner. Katie’s dad, however, did a full rehearsal and practiced his speech from his position at the top table, to an empty marquee. It was quite touching to see him trying to quell his pre-speech nerves. As a very proud dad, he was also trying to snap some pictures of his two daughters – all of which they hated, Relax and leave the photography to the professionals!

Most of the day, apart from the wedding ceremony itself, took place outdoors, because of pandemic restrictions. Drinks were enjoyed in the sunny church car park – which was far more glamorous than it may sound! There was a huge car bar, providing bottles of Bud and prosecco to all the guests as they poured out of the church, and not only did it make for perhaps the Coolest Church Car Park Ever ™ but it also perfectly complemented the joy and happiness of the occasion.

Before long, we all headed to Katie’s mum’s to continue celebrations, where we were served delicious Jamaican food and the party really got started. I’ve seen my fair share of DIY garden weddings over the last year and it’s always a recipe for a great party. The tab behind the bar was getting bigger and bigger, the sun was shining, finally dancing was permitted, and the wedding guests were really ready to let loose! Drinks were enjoyed until the early hours, the groomsmen got all the Fosters their hearts desired, and the place radiated with happiness. Thank you, Katie and Andrew, for letting me be part of your day.
