Sally and Gavin - Hanbury Barn Wedding Venue,  Burton on Trent Wedding photography

Good morning! I feel like I’ve barely come up for air in the last few months as I’ve been so busy with weddings, but it’s really lovely to have the opportunity to sit down and look back at all the stunning weddings in Warwickshire and beyond that I’ve worked at this summer. Today I’m going to tell you all about Sally and Gavin’s wedding at Hanbury Wedding Barn inBurton on Trent.

Like most of my couples this year, Sally and Gavin had their wedding postponed because of covid lockdowns. But unlike most of my couples, Sally and Gavin had a baby in the interim! So before I shot their wedding, I’ve been able to spend some time with them in their home, taking some photos of their little one Ella, and chatting about their plans for the big day. It was a lovely intimate way to get to know them both and understand their family.

Eight months after taking their baby pictures, I met with Sally and Gavin again to go through the final details for the wedding. I was reminded that eight months is a long time – that little Ella had turned into a very grown up little one in her dress and jelly shoes! I knew that she’d look just gorgeous on the wedding day, and of course, she did.

Although she may have looked like an angel, however, as babies do she was reluctant to sleep when required (too excited, maybe?!) and so on my wanderings round Hanbury Wedding Barn I bumped into Sally’s mum on multiple occasions, getting increasingly frantic and clocking up hundreds of thousands of steps with the buggy, trying to calm her down. By the end of the morning I think every available pair of hands had a go! Talk about stealing the focus from the bride and groom…

It was my first time at Hanbury Wedding Barn, and it’s always really fun for me to work at a new venue. I get to explore, to find the best backdrops and interesting features to capture, and I also like to try and create some new images that the venue might not have seen before. So after I’d checked in with the bridal prep, I went for a snoop.

And I was in for a real treat! There were lots of lovely photo opportunities at Hanbury Wedding Barn – including a gorgeous lake and beautiful adjacent rolling Staffordshire countryside. I was able to get a good feel for the place and plot out where I thought we might do some group shots, where the confetti pics would look best, and the optimum spot for capturing all those dancefloor shapes.

It had been a bit of a gloomy Staffordshire sky that had greeted us first thing, but by mid-morning, the cloud started to burn off and the sun was peeping through. By the time Gav, his friends, and the guests were arriving, it was a beautiful day, and everyone took full advantage of the sunshine, enjoying some drinks outside and soaking up the rays.

However, it wasn’t to last for long…about twenty minutes before the wedding, the sun disappeared and the heavens opened. The amazing team at the venue weren’t fazed, snapping into action with an army of brollies which kept Sally and her dad dry as they walked across the courtyard towards the ceremony. I’ve never seen such umbrella coordination before – if there were an Olympic prize for synchronised brolly wielding, the team at Hanbury Wedding Barn would win it. They did a cracking job, and Sally looked beautiful and, importantly, dry, as she walked down the aisle.

Following the ceremony, the great British weather did another 180, and the sun reappeared, so guests were able to head out into the courtyard and meander around the lake to enjoy that summer sun. As the wedding guests enjoyed their drinks and canapes, they were also treated to something that was a first even for a wedding pro like me – popcorn flavoured with minted lamb and roast beef. It has to be tried to be believed, and believe me I certainly sampled a few bits just to check if it was really as delicious as the guests claimed. Verdict: a win.

I was hoping for a beautiful sunset over the rural Staffordshire countryside, but by the evening the rain had returned and so I got creative and used the interior of the barn for a few shots with the bride and groom, before it was time to dance! Sally and Gavin had booked their friend’s band to play, who were utterly fantastic and had everyone grooving away in no time. After an hour or soon the dancefloor, Sally decided to kick out some tunes and got up on the stage to lead a song with all her guests. I just love to see the bride and groom letting their hair down and being their best selves on their wedding day, and it was a fabulous ending to what had been a gorgeous day.
