Hannah and Andy – Chelsea Old Town Hall Wedding Photography

Morning all! Something a little bit different from me today – I’ve ventured out of the Midlands all the way to London to photograph Hannah and Andy’s wedding at the gorgeous Chelsea Old Town Hall.

I love heading to London for wedding photography because a wedding in the capital can have a really different feeling to ones in rural Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, or Worcestershire. Instead of rolling countryside and lambs bleating in the background I’m more likely to be snapping the sun glinting off some cutting-edge architecture, or a couple next to an iconic tube sign! I love the variety.

Chelsea Old Town Hall is certainly a venue with a lot of history – it’s where Judy Garland, Richard Burton, and Hugh Grant all got married (not to each other – that’d be a day to remember), and it’s a lovely old building on the bustling King’s Road. The plan for the day was that I’d head to Hannah and Andy’s flat in the morning to meet the bride and bridesmaids for hair and make-up shots, before heading with Andy to the Town Hall. When I arrived, I met Hannah and her mum, who got stuck in to telling me about what weddings looked like back in her day – a good old-fashioned, knees-up-mother-brown, fight-at-the-end sort of affair! It was great chatting about how much weddings have changed over the years. Hannah was keen to reassure her mum that there’d be no fights, but I have to say there was a something in her eyes that suggested she was almost disappointed…

Hannah’s best friends soon came to join us, cracked open the bubbly and they started the major intergenerational debate of the day – are we drinking mimosas or buck’s fizz? Hannah and her friends declared it a mimosa, much to her mum’s outrage, who said she’d forgotten her roots! I’m not taking sides on this one…

Andy had arranged to meet several of his friends at a local pub before the ceremony. It was a sunny day, so they were all enjoying some beers outside and there was plenty of cheerful banter – although I have to say the chat about financial investement went right over my head! The drinks were slipping down very easily as they all basked in the sunshine, so before long we headed down to the Town Hall. I always think no trip to London is complete without an A-list celeb spot, and this one didn’t let me down – we only saw Gail Platt herself on the way!

Chelsea Old Town Hall is on the famous King’s Road and has very beautiful exterior. There was a lovely floral arch display on the steps so it was a great chance to take some group shots before and after the ceremony.

Like all the best London weddings, there was a big red bus involved! Andy and Hannah had arranged a bus to take all their wedding guests to their reception venue, The Gun pub, across London. Because of covid policies, there was no boozing to be done on the bus, but Hannah’s family didn’t let that dampen their spirits! They decided that if you were going to be on a bus altogether, there was a definite need for a sing song, so a few rousing rounds of everyone’s favourite bus singalongs made the journey pass a little quicker.

We did get caught in a protest near London Bridge, however, which meant that the bus was at a standstill for 10 or 15 minutes. Andy’s brother was desperate for a wee at this point (all those pints at the pub earlier catching up with him!) and so he hopped off the bus to find a toilet. The next 5 minutes were possibly the most funny of the whole day, as we watched him run over the bridge to attempt to get back on after the traffic started moving again.

The Gun Pub, where Hannah and Andy had their drinks reception, has the most amazing beer garden overlooking the O2 arena and the Thames. It’s the perfect place to have a chilled-out drink with an incredible view. Andy and Hannah had laid on food and drinks for everyone, so all the wedding guests sat outside and admired the great scenery. The room where the wedding breakfast was held overlooked the river, its design making it feel like it was the most luxurious boat! It was a lovely informal evening, and after Andy’s speech, the happy couple enjoyed drinking and chatting with their guests into the wee hours. A fabulous end to a perfect London day!

Congrats Andy and Hannah!
