DIY Weddings
A wedding exactly as they planned it... Jess and Ollie had big plans for their wedding day in the West Midlands. They wanted to do it all themselves, right down to the decorations and the games. So in the fields adjoining Berkswell Hall in the West Midlands, arrangements had been under way for months as the family hired their own marquee, caterers and bar staff, designed the table decorations, chose their Humanist celebrant, made the signage, organised the flowers (supplied by the bride’s grandmother), created the games and even cut the lawn themselves!
DIY weddings might sound like they could be an easy option, but in fact they’re often really time-consuming and not necessarily cheaper. The level of work you have to put in is much higher, although the beauty is that you get exactly what you want – you have the chance to put your own personal stamp on it and really create a day to remember.
But no one factored in a puppy that wasn’t yet house-trained
The preparations took place in an Airbnb just outside of the West Midlands in Warwick, with the proceedings slightly complicated by the fact that Ollie had bought a rather unusual wedding gift for Jess – a spaniel puppy.
Jess had always wanted a dog, but never thought Ollie would actually buy one for her. She particularly didn’t expect it on the morning of her wedding!
There were pros and cons to this – it was a thoughtful and adorable wedding present. But the puppy was brand new and definitely not house-trained. There may have been a few ‘whoops’ moments…
I do….
The service took place in a farm in West midlands under a beautifully constructed canopy with both the guests and the bridal party brought in on tractors. The Humanist service was personal and the couple wrote their own vows – it was my first experience of this type of non-denominational service and I thought it was brilliant, really engaging.
The groomsmen was tasked with making the cocktails while the wedding guests returned to the marquee in the tractor. The fact that they were … ahem … slightly too rum-based made my life easier as I captured the faces of the guests when they took their first sip. Grimaces always make for good photos!
And then, the games
Ollie and Jess had gone to a lot of effort to arrange some fun activities for everyone. Tossing the caber – yes, tossing the caber – certainly brought out a competitive streak in the groomsmen.
For the more faint-hearted, there was some gentle croquet on the mowed lawns – and when everyone was finally seated, the guests could test out their balloon-modelling skills during the speeches and before the wedding breakfast.
After the main course, and during a gap in the proceedings, the light outside was so amazing that I pulled the bride and groom out for more photos. It was a beautiful sunset – a wedding photographer can’t ask for much more!
It’s a rap…
The highlight of the day had to be the chief bridesmaid rapping her speech to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The two litre bottle of coffee liqueur brought back from LA especially for this day and shared among the wedding guests may have contributed to this classic moment.
It was a great day – relaxed, informal and just as Ollie and Jess wanted it. Congratulations to them, and of course their new baby.
I hope the house-training has been a success!
