A Croatian wedding, an amazing sunset – and an Ibizan beach party

Amy and James’s wedding took place at Brown Beach House in Trogir, a beautiful medieval town on the central Adriatic coast of Croatia. The hotel has its own small private beach with a little stone jetty which was the perfect (if a little dangerous) place for me to perch while I was taking photos of the ceremony.

Guests are often surprised when couples fly their own wedding photographers out with them, but European photographers tend to be quite stylised, whereas I’m definitely more about capturing the moment. And by doing it this way, they can meet me before the wedding, understand how I work, look at my portfolio and we can talk through exactly what they want.

I flew out a day or two early so that I could explore the local area, see how and where the sun sets and pinpoint places that would work best for the various shots I wanted to take. Arriving early also gives me the opportunity to take photos of any celebrations the night before – couples getting married abroad often have a mini stag/hen do with their guests.

Amy and James didn’t want an engagement shoot but they loved the location, so we took a little wander the night before the wedding to see where we could get some great shots the following day.

And now for my balancing act. On a rock, over the sea!
It was a really chilled day. The wedding prep was full of laughter, particularly when Amy opened the champagne to an explosion of bubbles. The lads arrived by boat from the town and walked to the hotel and the guests gathered in the bright sunshine for the beach ceremony.

Both the sunlight and the setting were stunning. Balancing on the rocks was the best place to take photos of the bride and groom exchanging vows, and I managed it without throwing a camera, or myself, into the sea!

Drinks and canapes took place on the beach and a lot of the guests were in bright colours which looked great against the deep blue of the Adriatic.

Then into the hotel to sample the traditional Croatian 7-course meal which lasted nearly four hours. To the delight of the wedding party, the bridesmaid gave a surprise speech and revealed a gift of a trip to Disneyland for the happy couple. Amy and her bridesmaid both ended up in tears – then downed a shot of Sambuca to celebrate!

Capturing the perfect post-wedding photographs

The old town lies on a small island connected to the mainland and the island of Čiovo by bridges – it’s full of fabulous buildings, but it is a busy tourist town. My challenge was to make it look like they were alone…

So after the ceremony we walked back to the town and found our perfect places for the post-wedding couple photos. For me, the pictures of Amy and James sitting on the 13th century Cathedral of St Lawrence in a beautiful beam of light really capture the beauty of the place.
