Wedding season is back!

I can barely describe how happy I am to be telling you that … I shot a wedding this week! I’ve so missed my job over the last 6 months and I am absolutely delighted to be back at work helping capture and create gorgeous memories for couples. It’s been 173 days since the last wedding shoot back in 2020 and let me tell you, I was READY for this one! (Once I’d remembered how to work the camera).

More importantly though, the couple whose wedding I shot this week had been waiting over a year for their rescheduled wedding. Bec and Ben were due to be married in April 2020, and this week they finally got to tie the knot, with their beautiful baby son Zachary in the gorgeous, lush green surroundings of Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

For their wedding weekend, the couple and 13 of their close family members had based themselves in the very picturesque Dinney Holiday Cottages, in Chelmarsh, Bridgnorth. The cottages overlook the gorgeous rolling Shropshire countryside and are the perfect setting for a real retreat. It was a lovely place to have everyone stay – the cottages meant that everyone had their own space but were all close together, which felt really special after the last twelve months.

It also meant that during the bridal prep, while Bec was having her hair and make up done, the whole family could keep popping in and out to help to calm those pre-wedding nerves. Ben's Grandma, who’s very special to them, was there throughout, and it was really touching to see this family come together and just enjoy time in each other’s company after so long apart.

Once the white dress was on and the veil adjusted, it was time to head off to Mill Barns, where the ceremony was to take place. Mill Barns is a gorgeous waterfront venue, and it’s always immaculately turned out, and is set in the beautiful Shropshire countryside. A photographer’s dream!

There, I met Stepdad, Graham, who’s a keen astro-photographer. Being very into his tech, he’d been commissioned by Bec and Ben to take the reins with a vlog of the day. Vlogs are a brilliant raw way of documenting everything about the wedding day – capturing emotion, nerves, and joy – and I can’t wait to see how his turned out.

For obvious reasons Bec and Ben had an outdoor ceremony, which in our wonderful British weather is always a dicey prospect. When I arrived at the venue I was roasting in the sun…half an hour later it was raining cats and dogs, and that set the tone for the day’s weather, which wouldn’t keep still for more than 40 minutes at a time…however in true Brit fashion we did the best with what we had and it certainly didn’t dampen any spirits.

Fortunately Mill Barns are really well prepared  so Bec and Ben, and their guests, were kept safe and dry throughout their ceremony. You could tell everyone was so excited to be there – the bride and groom, of course, were thrilled to be getting married after a year’s wait, the regsitras were happy to be back doing what they do best, and the photographer was soggy but absolutely over the moon…

The day was a real family affair – there were just 15 people at the ceremony, in line with covid guidance, which made everything feel very intimate and special. Afterwards, Bec and Ben’s families spent some time catching up with a glass of fizz, while Zachary kept everyone entertained. They’d travelled from all over the UK – Cornwall, Liverpool, and London – and the atmosphere was full of love as people were reunited in such happy circumstances after a very difficult year.

To end the formal part of the wedding day, the party set off some smoke bombs (which Ben had been itching to get at all day!) and waved goodbye to Mill Barns. Then, it was back to the Dinney Cottages for fish and chips and a beer, watching the sun set over the hills of Bridgnorth.

It was a real privilege to be part of Bec and Ben’s special day, and now I’ve shot the first wedding of my 2021 season I’m just chomping at the bit to shoot more!
