Krishna & Rikeshs's Winstanley House Wedding Photography

I always get super excited when I get asked to photograph a Hindu wedding. With the endless celebrations, vibrant colours and costume changes my camera doesn’t rest for a second.
However, when it came to Rickesh and Krishna’s wedding it was extra special because I was looking forward to being embraced by Krishna’s family once more. I first met the couple at Krishna’s sister’s wedding. We had the opportunity to trial a few couple shots in the afternoon and from that moment onwards, I was part of the couple’s journey to their happily ever after.
A day in Paris
My next encounter with the couple found me in Paris, the city of love, where I was tasked with capturing the engagement shoot. Many of the iconic landmarks were photographed but my favourite picture of the couple was of them in front of a Muriel featuring some awesome monkeys that we stumbled across in the Latin quarter. It was such a memorable holiday for the couple that the Eiffel Tower and Louvre Pyramid even featured on their wedding day.
Our relationship developed so much over the months that as we were tucking into a Nando’s one afternoon I decided to forgive Rickesh for being a Manchester United fan, although its probably easy for me to do this with Lvierpool being top of the league.
The not stop wedding day begins
Having seen the action-packed schedule of the wedding day I only agreed to capturing it on camera if I was supplied with endless supplies of Redbull and samosas. With the deal done it was time to get to the wedding for a 6am start. Today’s wedding was to take place at Winstanley House in Leicestershire.
The morning’s celebrations started off with a quiet and intimate affair with just Krishna and her two sisters. As more bridesmaids and family arrived the voices got louder, the hugs got bigger and the tears already started to flow.
It was time for the family tradition which I’d first witnessed at Krishna’s sister’s wedding. Krishna’s Dad placed a glass of whisky in each of the bridal party’s hands – it was time for the celebrations to begin!nAnd so, Krishna walked down the aisle in her first dress of the day, arm in arm with her Dad. Further tears were shed during the civil service by the bridal party and a number of the wedding guests. After the confetti was thrown and the standard group photos were had, we released a white balloon for every friend and family member who could not be there on the day. More tears were shed.
With drinks and canapé in hand it was clear at this point that the bride looked a little merry. Despite this we ventured into Braunstone Park to capture some beautiful photos of the couple before realising that we were already running massively behind schedule.
Wedding Ceremony number 2
Krishna rushed off to her room to get changed into dress number two. Already a pro at getting ready, it was only forty minutes later before the bride was ready to take part in the Hindu sacred traditions. Moving into the Vidai ritual it was evident that many more tears were destined to be shed as emotions were heightened. It wasn’t long before the bride was in floods of tears as she said goodbye to her family while being welcomed into the Patel family.
As the guests went home to get changed it was time to have a quiet five minutes with Mr & Mrs Patel in the bar. Phew – an essential time out for us all!
FInal dress change
And finally, on to dress three, the last time the bride was to be ceremoniously decorated that day. At this point I managed to get some tender photos of the bride and groom unveiling themselves to one another. At this point I discovered that the Patels should have practiced their champagne spraying before the wedding. Anyone who follows my weddings knows that this is one of my signature photographs where I get the couple to shake and then open a champagne bottle. I have to say it was one of the most disappointing moments I’ve got on camera as the champagne trickled out! Fortunately, there was plenty of drama yet to capture.
The evening celebrations are always my favourite part of a Hindu wedding. Once the emotional speeches are finished, the bhangra dancing cannot help to put a smile on everyone’s face, that and Krishna’s Dad offering a free bar for an hour! It was time to party.
I managed to capture a few final romantic photographs of the couple outside under the glittering lights before letting them dance the night away with family and friends. While I was officially working as a professional photographer, I felt it wasn’t only Krishna who had been welcomed into the Patel family that day.
